ANESTHESIOLOGIST Lexi Northrup Writing 1010 December 17, 2013

WHAT IS AN ANESTHESIOLOGIST? In the United States, an anesthesiologist is defined as a registered nurse who has completed specialized education and training in anesthesiology.

MY QUESTION What is a day in the life of an anesthesiologist? To answer this question I… 1.Analyzed articles 2.Watched videos 3.Interviewed my dad 4.Used personal experience

ARTICLE I decided to look at articles that would give me a general idea of anesthesia and how it is used buy an anesthesiologist. Wikipedia-Anesthesia Schooling 4 years of undergraduate 4 years of medical school 4 year residency Total of 12 years to become an anesthesiologist Equipment used Medical gases Anesthetic agents and vapors Breathing circuit Roles of an anesthesiologist Preoperative physicians Ensuring the patient won’t feel pain during the surgery Keeping patient calm during pre-op, surgery, post-op Monitoring required Vitals (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels) Minor surgeries (vitals + carbon dioxide and intake of anesthesia) Extensive surgeries (vitals + temperature, urine output, pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output, neurological function)

VIDEO This video follows Dr. Matt Norkunas, an attending at Maimonides Medical Center.

INTERVIEW Question #1: How does this anesthesiologist prepare for surgery? watch?v=CrLJwwSnUws

Question #2: What do you think this the most interesting part of an anesthesiologist job? “ For me, the most interesting job is their knowledge on the various types of medications and how they can be combined and integrated to match the physical and sensation needs of a patient. For example, the anesthesiologists have medication to control blood pressure, called vaso dilation and constriction. The patients loss of sensation and being able to keep them alive with medications is all very fascinating.”
