Some Grand Challenges Longitude Prize 2014 Help people with dementia Restore movement to the paralyzed Ensure clean water Ensure sustainable food *Prevent resistance to antibiotics Fly without damaging environment NSF/NAE 14 Make solar energy affordable Provide energy from fusion Carbon sequestration methods Manage the nitrogen cycle Clean water Urban infrastructure Health informatics Engineer better medicines Reverse-engineer the brain Prevent nuclear terror Secure cyberspace Enhance virtual reality Advance personalized learning Tools for scientific discovery Xprize 8 Safe drinking water Personal Health Monitoring Energy & Water from Waste Around the World Ocean Survey Transforming Parentless Youth Brain-Computer Interface Wireless Power Transmission Ultra-Fast Point-To-Point Travel

What (Not) To Do DA success comes from a confluence of domain and algorithm expertise Takes time and dedication Quick forays into “the next big thing” will not work Special issues, special sessions, keynotes, topical workshops without long-term commitment – Discourages EDA researchers from branching out into new fields – Barrier to bringing domain experts into our community

Let’s Make a Commitment I propose that we, as a community, pick a subset of grand engineering challenges and commit to working together to solve them That we commit to: – Funding this work – Providing places for the work to be published – Celebrate the advancements we make Even if they do not result in traditional EDA tools and technologies.

Some Examples Support urban infrastructure, reduce energy consumption, and carbon emissions – Create viable intelligent roadway signaling (i.e., timed traffic lights) at the city scale. Reduce global warming with efficient carbon mineral sequestration techniques – CAD for catalysis to speed up these processes Provide safe drinking water for everyone (third world, and California) – CAD for water purification technologies
