Starter – List the nine forms of energy Conservation of energy

Learning Objectives To draw energy transfer chains To discuss how energy is conserved To calculate energy transfer values

Match each of these to the type of energy that it contains A mug of coffee A piece of coal A squashed spring A freewheeling bicycle Heat energy Chemical energy Potential energy Kinetic energy

Heat as waste Whenever energy is transferred from ONE FORM to another, only part of the INPUT energy is usefully transferred as OUTPUT energy in the form that is wanted. The remainder is transferred in some non-useful way and is therefore WASTED ENERGY. In most cases the wasted energy is usually heat and so most energy chains end with heat.

electrical light sound heat What are the main energy transfers for a television?

chemical kinetic sound heat What are the main energy transfers for a car engine?

electrical sound heat What are the main energy transfers for a radio?

Conservation of energy “Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another.” What happens to the total energy of a system before and after and energy transfer? It remains the same but exists in different forms

electrical light sound heat The amount of electrical energy which is inputted equals the total amount of energy outputted

The law of conservation of energy Energy can be transferred in more than one form at a time. The INPUT energy will always equal the total OUTPUT energy. “Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another.”

Electrical energy 100% Heat energy 20% Kinetic energy 22% (Wasted vibration of the drill) Kinetic energy 58% (Useful spinning of the drill bit) Energy Transfer Values
