Truckers Safety Summary Mine hazard training required prior to start of work at the mine site. Violations of mine safety laws & regulations can be issued to trucking contractors and drivers. Report mine safety hazards you may observe to mining company. Stay alert……………..stay alive.

On February 8, 2004, a 57-year-old, contract truck driver (yard shifter) with 17 years mining experience was fatally injured. The accident occurred on the surface at an underground stone mine. The victim was at the trailer staging area of the parking lot preparing to attach his tractor to one of the enclosed bulk trailers. He used the rear access ladder to climb on top the trailer where he opened two of the hatches. During this task, he lost his balance and fell 12 feet to the ground.

Wear fall protection where there is a danger of falling. Conduct a risk analysis before starting a task to identify hazards and implement measures to ensure persons are properly protected. Train all personnel to help them recognize and understand procedures to safely perform tasks. Monitor work tasks to reinforce safe procedures and obtain feedback from employees on the use of fall protection systems.

On April 16, 2004, a 74-year-old, customer truck driver with 50 years experience was fatally injured at a bulk loading facility at a cement operation. The victim had positioned his trailer and lowered the air powered access walkway, with enclosed handrails, to open a trailer hatch lid. The hatch lid caught on the handrails and prevented the walkway from retracting. He attempted to dislodge the hatch lid with a pry bar. During this task, the access walkway retracted and he fell 11 feet to the ground.

Establish traffic patterns that ensure safe alignment of vehicles with access equipment. Establish operating procedures for customers to safely perform tasks. Post these procedures in a prominent place for customers to review. Train customers in the established procedures. Monitor customers to ensure that procedures are followed. Customers---Notify mine management when any problems are encountered with machinery or equipment.
