Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior? Do Now: Write your name on the sheet given to you when you walked in. I will read three definitions that were either in the PowerPoint from last night or were in the lesson yesterday. Write down the term that is being defined. Friday, December 11, 2015 Homework 1.Read/take notes on the powerpoint for Tuesday 2.Test Corrections due Tuesday 3.Learning assignment due by December 23

Law of Effect Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior?

Fixed-ratio Schedules A schedule that reinforces a response only after a specified number of responses. Getting a free item at starbucks after making 12 purchases Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior?

Reinforces a response after an unpredictable number of responses. Variable-ratio Schedule Slot machines: Gambler has no way of predicting how many times he must put a coin in the slot & pull the lever to hit a payoff but the more times a coin is inserted the greater the chance of a payout. People who play slot machines are often reluctant to leave them, especially when they have had a large number of un-reinforced responses. Door to door salesmen: Uncertain how many houses they will have to visit to make a sale, but the more houses they try, the more likely that they will succeed. Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior?

Fixed-interval Schedule A schedule of reinforcement that reinforces a response only after a specified time has elapsed. Example: A weekly paycheck is a good example of a fixed-interval schedule. The employee receives reinforcement every seven days, which may result in a higher response rate as payday approaches. Fish Feeding. You feed your fish every day at 4:00. After a few days of this, you might start noticing your fish starts swimming toward the top of his tank every day around 4:00. Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior?

Variable-interval Schedule A schedule of reinforcement that reinforces a response at unpredictable time intervals. If you have a boss who checks your work periodically, you understand the power of this schedule. Because you don’t know when the next ‘check-up’ might come, you have to be working hard at all times in order to be ready. In this sense, the variable schedules are more powerful and result in more consistent behaviors. Aim: How does operant conditioning impact behavior?

Which type of schedule do you think is better? Variable or Fixed?

VARIABLE!!! Realistically, reinforcing a behavior every single time it occurs can be difficult and requires a great deal of attention and resources. Partial schedules not only tend to lead to behaviors that are more resistant to extinction, they also reduce the risk that the subject will become satiated. If the reinforcer being used is no longer desired or rewarding, the subject may stop performing the desired behavior. For example, imagine that you are trying to teach a dog to sit. If you are using food as a reward, the dog might stop performing the action once he is full. In such instances, something like praise or attention might be a more effective reinforcer.
