Section 1: Early Influences Essential Question: Describe the two major political ideals that colonists brought to America from England, List each of the 3 significant political documents and give an example of how it limited the monarch, List an example of limited government and representative government as seen in the colony.

Section 1: Early Influences Political ideals of English colonists: limited government Limited government is the idea that while people need some government to maintain order, the government’s powers need to be carefully limited leaving some powers and freedom to the people representative government Representative government is the idea that those in charge must be chosen by the people and operate in the interest of the people (unlike monarchs whom receive their power by birth and can act in their own interest)

Section 1: Early Influences Major documents that limited the power of English monarchs: the Magna Carta- establishes rule of law- Kings must follow rules too No taxes without approval Trial by jury of peers the Petition of Right- Kings cannot just make new laws or act as they wish No illegal imprisonment No soldiers in private homes No military rule in time of peace

Section 1: Early Influences Evidence of English political ideals in colonial governments: Most charters limited government.
