Conductor in a Magnetic Field – The Motor Principle A magnet creates a magnetic field with separate field lines that flow in a specific direction An electric current flowing through a conductor also produces a magnetic field which rotates in a specific direction around it This interaction of electricity and magnetism is called electromagnetism

What would happen when the magnetic field from a permanent magnet interacts with the magnetic field of a conductor with a current flowing through it? a force would be produced the direction of the force would be perpendicular to the magnets magnetic field and to the direction of the current the magnitude of the force depends on the magnitude of the magnet and the current as well as the angle between the conductor and the magnetic field this is referred to as the motor principle

Right Hand Rule #3 (Motor Principle) the fingers of your open right hand point in the direction of the magnetic field of the magnet your thumb points in the direction of the current of the wire the force produced is in the direction of your open palm 13.5 UC #1,2 RHR #3 Demo Motor Principle Video Maglev Train
