0-13 REPRESENTING DATA Goal: Use tables and graphs to organize data and answer questions Eligible Content: A

Vocabulary  Data – information, facts or numbers that describe something.  Bar Graph – compares different categories of data by showing each category as a bar whose length is related to the frequency.  Line Graph – a graph used to show how data changes over time.

Using a Table YearDairyVegetablesFruitTotalChange In which 5-year period did the total consumption per person of dairy, fruit and vegetables increase the most? 2.When was there a decrease in total consumption?

Using a Table The data in the table shows the number of endangered species in the US as of Which group has the least number of endangered species? 2. Which group has the greatest number of endangered species? 3. Suppose the names of the groups are listed in alphabetical order. Would questions 1 and 2 be easier or harder to answer? GroupNumber of species Arachnids5 Amphibians9 Reptiles14 Snails15 Crustaceans16 Insects28 Mammals59 Clams61 Fish68 Birds75 Arachnids Birds

Bar Graph The bar graph shows the percent of US households subscribing to basic cable TV. 1. In which year was the percent the greatest? What was the percent? 2. In what year was the percent the least? What was the percent? 1995, 65% 1980, 22%

Bar Graph The bar graph shows the number of CDs and tapes sold in different years. 1. From which type showed an increase? 2. From which type showed a decrease? 3. Between which 2 years was the biggest increase in CDs sales? CDS Tapes

Line Graph The line graph shows the cost of making a movie in different years. 1. During which 3 years did the average cost decrease from the prior year? 2. Which year showed the greatest decrease? , ,
