Rotation and Revolution

Solar System A group of objects in space that move around a central star

Rotation The spinning of a planet on its axis The Earth’s rotation takes about 24 hours or one day Axis

Axis An imaginary line that runs through both poles of a planet

Rotation Rotation causes the day and night cycle on Earth Night Day Light From The Sun

Rotation Rotation also causes the Sun and the stars to appear to move across the sky Day Night

This object just completed a revolution The action of one object moving around another in an orbital path This object just completed a revolution

Orbit The path an object takes as it revolves around a second object

Revolution The Earth’s revolution takes about one year, or 365 days

Example - Revolution The Earth revolves around the Sun Earth Sun

Example - Revolution The Moon revolves around the Earth Moon Earth
