Polycarbonates By: Chantal & Leah

The General Proprieties… Very tough Heat resistant Poor chemical resistance Transparent High pricing Easy installation Resistant to UV rays

Uses for polycarbonate House equipment Exterior vehicle components Outdoor lighting fixtures Nameplates Vehicle windows (not for automobiles) brackets and structural parts medical supply components plastic lenses for eyeglasses

Cons Polycarbonate is made with toxic materials. When made, requires phosgene which is hazardous to human health and environment. Has low chemical resistance (drawback for automotives) Poor processing( high viscosity grades) which is needed for moulding Highly sensitive to abrasive cleaners and scratching Very expensive Contains BPA, a chemical linked to cancer

Pros Virtually unbreakable and can withstand massive force (ex. Police shields, bullet-proof windows) Great blocker of ultraviolet rays Very lightweight when compared to glass or acrylic, making then easy to transport and install (low labour costs!) Resistant to sun, rain and snow, and hot & cold temperatures, making it effective for outdoor use. Polycarbonates are recyclable
