Autumn holidays in England

Hello, Halloween!

Halloween celebrations in England were popularised in the late twentieth century under the pressure of American cultural influence, including a stream of films and television programmes aimed at children and adolescents, and the discovery by retail experts of a marketing opportunity to fill the empty space before Christmas.

The tradition continued in areas of northern England as late as the 1930s, with children going from door-to- door "souling" (i.e., singing songs) for cakes or money. The English Reformation in the 16th century de- emphasised holidays like All Hallows Day or All Souls Day and their associated eve.

Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, United Kingdom.
