 What is copyright?  What is protected by copyright?  Who owns copyright?  What has copyright got to do with me ?  What is creative commons and how can we use it?

Copyright is the rights a person has to their own work. These works can include artistic works, books, computer programs, sound recording and films. The right allows the person to copy/share their work and show it to other people.

Artistic works Literature Music Films au/copyright- guidelines/copyright---a- general-overview/1-3-what- is-protected-(types-of-works)

 The author who made the material owns copyright – writer, artist, composer etc.  Sound recording – record company  Film – producer  Broadcast - broadcaster

 Creative commons provides free licenses for creators to use when making their work available for the public to use.  This license helps the creator give permission for people to use their work.  Creative common licenses allow the creator to decide how other people can use their work.

 All creative common licenses allow work to be used for education purposes – teachers and students.  Teachers and students can usually copy, share and sometimes modify without seeking permission from the creator.

When using Creative Commons material, you must do the following:  Credit the creator  Provide the title of the work  Provide the URL  Indicate the type of license it has  Abide by the copyright notice

 Copyright is part of the law.  It is about protecting the work that people such as authors, composers, writers and publishers produce.  When using digital media, you have to be aware of what you can and cannot use and respect the copyright license.
