C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL First Advisory Committee Meeting February 21, 2007 Regional Program Division (RPD) People, Protected Areas, and Conservation Corridors (PPC) KBA Conservation Network

Background Conserving Earth’s Living Heritage proposes a framework for site- conservation planning strategies that need to be refined and tested in the field; C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL

KBA identification and delineation in final stage in many Hotspots and HBWAs; KBA workshop in Costa Rica (2005) initiated the network (which was “dormant” until now); RPD-PPC is transitioning to serving the institutional need for learning, refinement of conservation standards and strategies, and capacity building. Greatest strength of CI is the collective experience and expertise of its staff C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL KBAs in the Philippines Background

C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL To be able to capture and systematize this knowledge, and to make the results widely available for the organization and its partners The Challenge

1.Develop, validate, and disseminate institutional standards and best practices for KBA conservation; 2.Promote the development and adoption of conservation planning tools, build the knowledge and capacity of CI’s staff and partners; 3.Enable learning through the exchange of expertise, lessons learned, and collaborative engagement of CI experts in field efforts; 4.Conduct field learning projects on selected KBAs to further refine and test site- conservation planning methodologies. C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL The Network Objectives

Group (8-10 people) from Regional programs, PPC, and CABS; Help refining objectives, and strategies for the Network; Evaluate and monitor proposals. Initially open to all CI staff interested in site- conservation planning; Incorporation of CI’s partner organizations will be possible. C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL Network Structure Membership Advisory Committee

Common network questions 1.How do we identify and work with the different stakeholders of the site? 2.Are the methods proposed in the Strategy Handbook appropriate for KBA conservation planning? C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL 3.Once the KBA is delineated, a)how do we select conservation targets? b)how do we assess the conservation targets’ state in a measurable (qualitative and qualitative) manner? c)how do we formulate the objectives that will guide the rest of the planning process?

Network strategy 1.Field learning projects 2.Communication a)Workshops; b)Web portal i.Virtual conferences; ii.Post general information and news; iii.Publish and search for documents, photos, and videos (virtual library); iv.Create discussion boards; v.Create workspaces for peer collaboration. C ONSERVATION I NTERNATIONAL

Expected products KBA conservation planning and implementation standards; Conservation planning and implementation best practices; Conservation planning tools, such as guidelines, methodologies, toolkits, etc.; Case studies (documented case studies); Strengthened professional relations among conservation practitioners.
