Unit 5 Vocab Words Distributive Property – The sum of two addends multiplied by a number is the sum of the product of each addend and the number. a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c) Exponent – The number of times a number or expression (called the base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the “power” Order of Operations – The rules to be followed when simplifying expressions. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract.

7.1 EXPONENTS Sometimes it is necessary to multiply a number by itself one or more times. For example, a math problem may require multiplying 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 x 5 x 5. In these situations, instead of writing 3 x 3, you can write 3², or instead of writing 5 x 5 x 5 x 5, 5⁴ means the same thing. The first number is the base. The small, raised number is called the exponent or power. The exponent tells how many times the base should be multiplied by itself. Example: 6³ 6 x 6 x 6 (6 x 6 = 36 x 6 = 216) *Any number raised to the exponent of 1 equals the base number. Example: 4¹ = 4 10¹ = 10 25¹ = 25 *Any number raised to the exponent of 0 equals 1. Example: 4ᴼ = 1 10ᴼ = 1 25ᴼ = 1

7.2 Evaluate Expressions with Exponents When solving an expression that includes an exponent, first find the exponential product. Then solve by following the mathematical signs in the problem. Example 7: Solve: 4² + 9 Example 8: Solve: 2 x 3³
