Defining Success Grade 8, Unit 6: Lesson 5

Spheres and Cylinders To be successful in this lesson you will build upon your work from previous lessons as you learn about finding the volume of spheres. You will be expected to complete a problem similar to the one presented.

Beach Ball Problem A beach ball without air is pressed flat so that it makes a circular region with a diameter of 9 inches. What is the volume of the beach ball when it is filled with air? Designer Note: Add a picture of a full and deflated beach ball.

Beach Ball Problem To solve this problem, you need to recognize that the ball (sphere) with diameter of 9 inches has a radius of 4.5 inches. You should also know that the formula to use for finding the volume of a sphere is

Beach Ball Problem Use the formula and substitute letting r = 4.5

Spheres and Cylinders Throughout the lesson you will be expected to: - Use appropriate tools strategically, - Attend to precision, and - Look for and make use of structure.
