NATIVE AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY

Native American Myths are characterized by the following: TIME Native American storytelling is characterized by its sense of a ceaseless or circular movement of time.

Native American Myths are characterized by the following: NATURE Elements of nature are woven throughout Native American Mythology. The Sun, Water, Earth, and Trees play prominent roles in explaining otherwise misunderstood phenomena.

Native American Myths are characterized by the following: CHARACTERS Animals are used as main characters, often imbued with human qualities. Specifically, the Trickster as a character is a favorite of mythic storytellers.

Native American Myths are characterized by the following: PERFORMANCE The gifted storyteller, of high status in the tribe, uses chants, facial expressions, demonstrative body language, and musical or percussive accompaniment to perform the oral myth.

The Trickster A favorite character of Native American tales often takes the form of an animal.

The Trickster Tricksters live by their wits. Because they symbolize the dual nature of human beings, trickster tales usually present their protagonists as complex characters, mixing humor and seriousness, earthiness and spirituality.
