Revising

Why revise? Revising is the step of the writing process when you make the form and content of your writing be appropriate for your audience.

The Writing Process Pre-writing Drafting Revising Editing Publishing Remember: –Revising means making your writing appropriate to your audience in tone, language use, format, content, etc. –Editing means making your writing clear for your audience by fixing capitalization, usage and grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Tip 1: Distancing One of the keys to revising and editing is to revise/edit at a distance from the writing. When you first write something, you are too close to it to revise/edit it effectively! –Peer editing is most effective (as long as you can trust your editor to criticize your work properly!). The peer editor looks at your work differently that you would. –Set your work aside for a time, until you can look at it with “fresh eyes”.

Tip 2: Think about AUDIENCE Carefully consider whether or not your work is appropriate to the audience you intend to read it. Carefully consider whether the format you chose is appropriate, or whether you have followed the guidelines for format.

Tip 3: Read your draft aloud Read your draft aloud. Pay attention to anything that does not make sense, and make notes for revising/editing. OR Have someone else read your draft aloud. Pay attention to anything that does not make sense, and make notes for revising/editing. As you read aloud, notice anything that is inappropriate for the intended audience.

When am I finished revising? You are finished with this step when you feel that your writing is: –Appropriate for your audience –Of adequate length –In the proper format …and you are ready to move on to editing – that is, making your writing accessible to your audience.

Assignment Return to the draft of your informal essay. The assignment has been changed. Here are the new details of your assignment: –Your audience is one of your parents/ guardians. –Your format is a friendly letter. –Your purpose is to tell about either a memory from the past, your favorite place in the world, HHS, or an event that changed your life.

Friendly Letter Basics A friendly letter is a letter to a close friend or acquaintance. It is very different from a business letter. Begin the letter with Dear ____,. Notice that you use a comma! Divide your ideas into paragraphs. Follow paragraph basics – indent, one main idea per paragraph, etc. End your letter with Yours truly, or Sincerely, or Love, followed by your signature. There is no need to print your name below your signature! (Presumably your friends/family know who you are.)

Copyediting Remember to use CUPS! That is, check for: –Capitals –Usage and grammar –Punctuation –Spelling Circle all mistakes and/or make notes on the draft.
