Presentation transcript:

CARPET-RUG WEAVING Turkish carpets and rugs, whether hand knotted or flat woven are among the most well known and established hand crafted art works in the world.

Historically: religious, cultural, environmental, sociopolitical and socioeconomic conditions provided artistic inspiration.

Apparently originating in the traditions of largely nomadic Turkish people, the Turkish carpet, like the Persian carpet, developed during the medieval Seljuk period.

The many styles of design reached maturity during the early Ottoman Empire.

Turkish (also known as Anatolian) rugs and carpets are made in a wide range of distinct styles originating from various regions in Anatolia.

Important differentiators between these styles may include: the materials, construction method, patterns and motif, geography, cultural identity and intended use.

Rugs have been woven in Anatolia since before the 13th century.

Carpets derive their names from the localities in which they are produced, tribal groups they are associated with, as well as from the techniques of their manufacture, the characteristic patterns of their ornamentation, the lay out of the design and the intention of their use.

EMBROIDERY Embroidery is the handcraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins.

Embroidery is most often used on caps, hats, coats, blankets, dress shirts, denim, stockings, and golf shirts.

LACE Lace is an openwork fabric, patterned with open holes in the work, made by machine or by hand. The holes can be formed via removal of threads or cloth from a previously woven fabric, but more often open spaces are created as part of the lace fabric.

POTTERY Pottery is the ceramic material which makes up pottery wares, of which major types include earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. The place where such wares are made is also called a pottery. Pottery also refers to the art or craft of a potter or the manufacture of pottery.

The definition of pottery is "all fired ceramic wares that contain clay when formed, except technical, structural, and refractory products."Some archaeologists use a different understanding of this definition by excluding ceramic objects such as figurines which are made by similar processes and of similar materials but are not vessels.

Pottery is made by forming a clay body into objects of a required shape and heating them to high temperatures in a kiln which removes all the water from the clay.

A clay body can be decorated before or after firing.
