Beyond Apple Day

 The foundations of student engagement are embedded within the Alberta programs of study.  True alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment facilitates student engagement.  Engagement has more to do with commitment than with enjoyment.  Metacognition plays a fundamental role in student engagement.  Assessment for learning practices enhance student engagement. 14 Performance assessment is a closer measure of our children's ability to achieve the aspirations we hold for them than are conventional forms of standardized testing. Eisner (1999)

15 A good assessment instrument can be a learning experience. But more to the point, it is extremely desirable to have assessment occur in the context of students working on problems, projects or products that: ◦ genuinely engage them ◦ hold their interest ◦ motivate them to do well. Gardner (1993)
