18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Status of L3 Organization in 2002 Activity in 2002 Organization in 2003 Outlook Latest physics results in:

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Meetings in 2002 –Chair of management board (Juan Alcaraz) –Analysis coordinators (Juan Alcaraz, SM) –Analysis sub-group coordinators Organization in 2002 –Three reviews of all analyses (2 to 4 days) –Monday meetings of sub-group coordinators, off- line experts, Monte Carlo production, to organize/review the weekly activity –Regular WW and two-photon group meetings –Analysis meetings when needed (1 or 2 monthly)

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele ‘Papering’ in 2002 WW and two-photon analyses are discussed in sub-group meetings first and then in analysis meetings Other analyses are discussed at analysis meetings When deemed final, draft are prepared and discussed with prof. Ting Paper draft are processed by an editorial board with internal referees (chair: SM) After two-four meeting they are released to all institute-leaders for final comments and sent to Physics Letters

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Activity in 2002 –Produce almost all Monte Carlo still needed for W physics (complex QCD and higher order electroweak effects, millions of events) –Prepare the transition of the software to the CERN linux cluster after dismission 31/12/2002 of the former L3 supercomputer –Identify person-power pitfalls and optimise human resources (leaving students, post-docs) to complete analyses before departure, or leave enough information after departure.

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele 13 papers published in 2002 Search for a Higgs Boson Decaying into Two-Photons at LEP. Inclusive D*+- Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP. Lambda and Sigma zero Pair Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP. Determination of Alpha_s from Hadronic Event Shapes in e+e- Annihilation at 192 < root(s) < 209 GeV. The e+ e- -> Z gamma gamma -> q qbar gamma gamma Reaction at LEP and Constraints on Anomalous Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings. Measurement of Genuine Three-Particle Bose-Einstein Correlations in Hadronic Z Decay. Measurement of Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- -> W+W- Events at LEP. Production of Single W Bosons at LEP and Measurement of WW gamma Gauge Coupling Parameters. Search for Single Top Production at LEP. Search for a Higgs Boson Decaying to Weak Boson Pairs at LEP. Inclusive Charged Hadron Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP. Measurement of W polarisation at LEP Study of the e+e- -> Ze+e- process at LEP

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele 11 papers being processed Measurement of Branching Fractions of Tau Hadronic Decays Precision Electroweak measurements on the Z resonance Measurements of the Cross Sections for Open Charm and Beauty Production in gamma-gamma collisions at root(s)= GeV Charged Lepton Pair Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP Fractal effects in Hadronic Z Decays Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson at LEP (LEP Combination) QCD Studies in e+e- Annihilation from 30 to 209 GeV Search for Colour Reconnection effects in e+e- -> W+W- -> hadrons through Particle-Flow studies Measurement of Exclusive rho-rho Production in Two-Photon Collisions at High Q2 at LEP Proton Antiproton Pair Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP Search for Colour Singlet Exchange and Colour Reconnection Effects in Hadronic Z Decays from e+e- Annihilation

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Meetings in 2003 –Chair of management board and analysis coordinator (SM) –Analysis sub-group coordinators Organization in 2003 –No big changes wrt 2002: –Three long review of all activities (before winter/summer conferences and in fall) –Monday scheduling meetings –Regular WW and two-photon group meetings –Analysis meetings when needed

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Activity in 2003 –Complete in the first months all Monte Carlo production –Complete/publish the main-stream subjects: W Cross section, mass and couplings Fermion pair production Single photon production Main SUSY searches Running of electromagnetic coupling constant –Complete as many as possible of the other analyses –Gross estimate of 70 physics subjects… –Reasonable hopes of ~30 publications

18/12/2002 Status of L3 - Salvatore Mele Outlook –Still a lot of physics that might/will not be studied for lack of resources. –Do all efforts to recover information from almost-completed analyses, complete what possible and publish it. –Preparing a plan for dissolving the collaboration (SM): Review process for long-term analyses Reaction to possible new ideas Publication of data in a form usable by future experiments/theorists –Expect high activity (by few FTE) till Summer conferences 2004
