EMPHASIS Primary focal point –The feature that commands attention and makes a design visually interesting.

Emphasis Examples Architectural features such as fireplaces or decorative windows are often used as focal points. Works of art and decorative accessories are often emphasized in a design.

Rules and Guidelines of Emphasis The point of emphasis should command attention, but not dominate the overall design. Other features within the room should not compete for the emphasis

Rules The focal point of the room should be supported by the rest of the room. It should somehow relate to, but not dominate, the room. Remember proportion, scale and balance when choosing a focal point.

WAYS TO CREATE EMPHASIS Arrangement of furniture around a focal point. Use of line, color, texture, or pattern. Placement of accessories/ grouping. Use of lighting.

Group Problem Solving A living room contains a burgundy sofa, 2 beige armchairs, dark brown carpeting, beige walls, and a brown brick fireplace. How would you create a focal point in this room and why? Remember proportion, scale and balance

Emphasis Assignments Your client has a sentimental attachment to a favorite object. This object might be a picture, painting, sculpture, area rug, wall hanging, accessory, etc…. As the designer, your job is to make the object the focal point of the room. Using the various design elements found within the object, (line, color, textures, form..) how would you create an entire mood or theme for the room? 2 options for the assignment: Find a picture of a room with a focal point that catches your eye. It should be significant enough to be considered the center of interest in the room. Identify the use of elements in the picture to enhance the favorite object. Colors, lines, textures, forms. Find an object that could be considered a focal point of a room and sketch or cut out other furniture pieces and accessories that would be used to design the room around the object of interest. Attach the focal point object and all other pieces to white paper. Explain how you used, within the room creation, the use of elements to enhance the favorite object. Colors, lines, textures, forms.
