Hamlet has been influenced by society. Even in the second sene we see that Hamlet has taken on the identity of the grieving son. He is wearing dark clothing and acting as though he is mourning. It is clear that this is a societal requirement for those mourning because Hamlet criticizes Gertrude for not wearing the traditional garb, with his “frailty thy name is woman” ( ) speech. It seems as though society has dictated the way in which a son should act after a father’s death. Eugene Delacroix 1834).

In the play of Hamlet, many of the male characters are influenced by their fathers. It makes a case early on in the play that sons must revenge the death’s of their fathers. This can be seen with Fortenbras (2.2), Polonius ( ), and Hamlet (1.5). In the case of Hamlet, it is the the ghost of his father that requires his assistance in revenge. Hamlet is now taking on the identity of the good son by revenging his father’s death. Horatio, Marcellus, Hamlet, and the Ghost (Artist: Henry Fuseli 1798) [6]Henry Fuseli [6]

Hamlet is aware that he has been influenced by society in the past. In act 1 scene 5 Hamlet says, “Remember thee?/ Yea, from the table of my memory/ I’ll wipe away all trivial fond records,/ All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past/ that youth and observation copied there,/ And thy commandment all alone shall live,/ within the book and volume of my brain…” ( ). This however changes, Hamlet feels he is no longer being shaped by society. In reality he is being shaped by society more than ever when he takes on the ghost’s command for revenge.

Society does shape us today. Every time we walk out the door we choose whether to dress according to Societies standards or not. Which ever way we choose we are still allowing society to shape our decisions. A different way we allow society to shape us is in school. We go to school every day and learn what they want us to learn, just like Hamlet did. We are also shaped by societies laws. We choose to obey or disobey but they are still there. We know that if we want to live in society, we must obey society.

If Hamlet lived today what do you think Hamlet would do? I think that if Hamlet lived today he would be a gangster. He has a blood feud between himself and the rival gang, his uncle Claudius and his cohorts. He doesn’t care about who is in the way of the bullet so long as the bullet hits it’s target. Hamlet’s main target is Claudius and the innocent bystanders are Gertrude, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Polonius, Laertes, and virtually everyone in the Danish court except for Horatio.

We should think about how our decisions influence others. By disrupting class we do not only hurt our own education but we hurt other’s as well. Hamlet allowed societies influence to move him to murder his uncle. We would not want to allow anyone to pressure us to make decisions we now are wrong. Eugène DelacroixEugène Delacroix 1844).
