Objectives: To provide a general overview of information regarding the Advanced Placement (AP) program. To provide an overview of the courses and perquisites for AP offerings at ORHS. Understand the options for registering to take an AP Exam this year. 3

The Basics Advanced Placement Program ® (AP ® ) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses. At the end of the course, students take AP Exams—standardized exams that measure how well students have mastered college-level course work. Students who do well on AP Exams can earn college credit. 4

The Benefits of AP Courses AP courses can be challenging, but it’s work that pays off. AP courses are often the most interesting and fulfilling courses a student takes in high school. Students develop confidence, and learn the study habits and time management skills essential for success in college. 5

AP and College Admission Colleges rank “Grades in college prep courses” and “Strength of curriculum” as the top two factors in the admission decision.* 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.** 6 “We look favorably on students who have taken AP courses. The presence of AP courses is a sign that a student has chosen to challenge him/herself.” —Admission Officer * 2009 State of College Admission, NACAC ** Unpublished institutional research, Crux Research Inc. March 2007

AP Courses Offered by Our School: English Literature, 12 th English Language & Composition, 11 th American Government, 12 th Microeconomics, 12 th US History, 11 th World History, 10 th Psychology Calculus AB Calculus BC 7 French Spanish Computer Science Statistics Environmental Science Biology Physics Chemistry (Fall 2017)

What Are AP Courses Like? AP courses typically demand more of students than regular or honors courses. Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. AP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively. 8

AP Exams AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. Exams usually last around three hours. Each AP Exam contains: Multiple-choice questions Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response). 9

Why Take AP Exams? Stand out in the admissions process  Everyone wants to get into the college of their choice. Those that make it take the most challenging courses.  The AP Exams provide colleges and universities with additional information about your ability to succeed in college-level study. Earn Academic Scholarship Awards  Some of the most competitive scholarship awards consider AP exam scores. Experience a College-Level Test  The intensity of college exams catches far too many freshmen by surprise. Taking the AP Exams will put the students a step ahead, and give them a clear understanding of what they need to succeed on a college exam. 10

AP Credit Expands Students’ Options College credit earned through AP Exams allows students to move into upper-level college courses sooner, pursue a double major, and gain time to study and travel abroad. 11

By the Numbers: Oak Ridge currently offers 17 AP subjects and 50 sections of these courses. Over 500 students are involved in these classes. Enrollment criteria varies by department and class, however, our goal is to provide AP opportunities to all interested students. 12

Course Expectations Student demonstrates a commitment to the course. Student is responsible for mastering the material. Self-advocacy is an essential element for success in all AP courses. Student takes the AP Exam in May and an exam of similar rigor administered by the teacher of the course (this exam grade is calculated as part of the student grade.) 14

2016 AP Exams at ORHS Registration Window: February 22 nd -March 4 th – February 22 nd -March 4 th – ORHS finance office (Registration window will 3pm on March 4 th ) One, Mandatory Pre-administration meeting: April 18 th (7:15 am & 2 pm), April 19 th (3 pm), April 20 th (2 pm). Exam dates: May 2-13,
