Your Heredity What controls your physical traits? heredity The passing of traits from parents to their biological children

Your Heredity Genes are the basic units of heredity and are made of a chemical called DNA. You inherited half of your genes from your father and the other half from your mother.

Your Heredity Genes control how every cell in your body works. Some genes can cause disease. It helps to be aware that you might have inherited genes that could increase your risks of developing certain diseases. That way, you can make better decisions about your health.

Your Environment What your affects your personal health? environment All the living and nonliving things around you Physical EnvironmentSocial Environment Includes other people in your life and services Where you live Housing Climate Air and water quality Family Neighbors Educational opportunities Job opportunities Dangers such as crime and gangs

Physical Environment Your physical environment includes: Your home Your school The climate Air quality Water quality Breathing fresh air and drinking clean water are important for good health. Air pollution can harm the health of teens with respiratory problems such as asthma. The quality of indoor air and be affected by a family member who smokes. Water quality in cities is usually good because drinking water is purified. Water quality in the country often comes from wells and should be tested regularly because chemicals from farms can pollute well water.

The Mind-Body Connection Emotions Physical and Overall Health Your emotional health affects your physical and overall health. Your physical and overall health affects your emotional health. If you become very sad or angry, or if you have other strong emotions, talk to someone. Sometimes you may be in a situation that requires the professional health services of a counselor or medical provider.

Caring Think about how you would feel if you moved to a new city and went to a new school. What are some ways that you can make new students feel welcome at your school?
