Purpose To occlude the aneurysm sac in an attempt to preserve the parent artery. A brain aneurysm, also called a cerebral or intracranial aneurysm, is a ballooning of a weakened portion of an arterial wall. Estimates that up to one out of every 15 people in the United States will develop a brain aneurysm during their lifetime.

The coils fill the sac causing a thrombolytic effect

Conclusion The GDC is proving to be the go to procedure for posterior intracranial aneurysms and with time it may prove to be the only option for patients. This new technology proves to be less invasive than the typical surgery method and the hospital stay is less as well. This new device gives hope to patients who do not meet the requirements for a surgical procedure.
