Biocomplexity Research Coupled Natural and Human Systems

SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, POLICY CONDITIONS LANDSCAPE CHANGE BIOPHYSICAL CHANGE

What are the drivers of landscape change? How do social, economic, and policy conditions contribute to landscape change? What are the causes of anthropogenic environmental change?

What are the implications of landscape change for natural systems? What is the ecosystem response? How are biogeochemical cycles altered?

What are the feedbacks to society? To what degree to changes in biophysical conditions affect society? In what ways are these feedbacks mediated by effects on ecosystem services? How will these new conditions affect future land use choices?

Goals of Physical Geography “The goal of physical geography is to explain the spatial dimension of Earth’s dynamic systems - its energy, air, water, weather, climate, tectonics, landforms, rocks, soils, plants, ecosystems, and biomes.” (Geosystems) Environmental impacts involving climate, vegetation, water, soils, etc.

Goals of Physical Geography “Understanding human-Earth relations is part of the challenge of physical geography - to create a holistic (or complete) view of the planet and its inhabitants” (Geosystems) How can we move beyond “environmental impacts”? How can students be taught to use concepts from both natural and social sciences in analysis of environmental issues, within classes that are designated as either natural or social science?
