AP Music Theory Chapter 2 – Part 3

Tonality Organized system of tones in which one tone (the TONIC) becomes the central point to which the other tones are related. Another word: tonal center.

Key Tonal system based on the major and minor scales. However, tonality can be present scales other than major and minor.

Pentatonic Scales 5-tone scale A gapped scale, one that contains intervals of more than a step between adjacent pitches. Incomplete major scale The sequence of black keys on the keyboard coincides with the interval relationship of the pentatonic scale.

Pentatonic Scales

Non-Diatonic Scales Chromatic Scale is a nondiatonic scale consisting entirely of half-step intervals. Has no tonic. Each note equidistant from the next.

CHROMATIC SCALE

WHOLE TONE SCALE Six-tone scale made up entirely of whole steps.

BLUES SCALE Chromatic variant of the major scale with a flat 3 rd and a flat 7 th.
