ACT Prep Lesson I can apply critical reading skills and test taking strategies to effectively answer multiple choice questions

 False.  C is not more likely to be the answer than A, B, or D.  Answers are computer generated and are mixed up for everyone.  However, if you are going to guess, consistently guess the SAME letter every time!!  That way, if you miss some guesses, you will eventually get some of the guesses right because they are ALL THE SAME!

 False.  If you’ve double checked it and evaluated it, then change the answer if it is wrong. Research shows that more people make a change from right to wrong rather than wrong to right.  However, if you still aren’t sure, then DON’T CHANGE IT.

 False!  Practice and time management will ease your test anxiety! It will allow you focus on the questions instead of on the time and your question number!  That’s why we are giving you practice tests questions throughout the school year!  Using practice test websites will tell you why an answer is right or wrong in the format of the test.

 In "All of the above" and "None of the above" choices, if you are certain one of the statements is true don't choose "None of the above" or if one of the statements is false don't choose "All of the above".  In a question with an "All of the above" choice, if you see that at least two correct statements, then "All of the above" is probably the answer.  Remember that “All” or “None” is not always the right answer just because it is an option.

 There is no guessing penalty; always take an educated guess and select an answer.  Eliminate any obviously incorrect answers. Guessing something you know is wrong will hurt you.

 Look for “distracters,” answers that sound correct, but aren’t.  Don't keep changing your answer; usually your first choice is the right one, unless you misread the question.  What is the main idea of the passage “Frogs and Toads”? [Stem]  A Frogs and toads share many differences  and similarities. *`[Key]  B Frogs live closer to water than toads.[Distractor]  C Frogs and toads are like cousins.[Distractor}  D Frogs are different than toads.[Distractor]

1. CIRCLE words in the Stem(QUESTIONS ONLY) that you think are important to the question (don’t look at the answer choices yet!) For example, what should we circle in a question like: Which word most clearly implies that the car is sacred? ONE MINUTE

2. Look at the passage and underline anything you think is important to answering the questions just based on what you circled in the questions only TWO MINUTES

3. Go back to the questions and read the questions and the answers both this time 4. Choose the best answer for each question IF YOU FINISH EARLY OR CHANGE YOUR MIND Go back to the passage and mark where the answer is for each question or what made you change your mind from your first answer (For example, mark where you find the answer to #2 in the passage by writing a #2 next to the words in the passage) EIGHT MINUTES

Passage 1- “Rabbits”Passage 2- “Sacred” 1. C 2. A 3. D 4. A 5. D 1. D 2. C 3. C 4. B 5. C 6. D

 Why did you miss what you missed?  How was your timing?  Do you feel better about managing time?  How can you improve?

 After reviewing the answers, look at the questions you got wrong. -Only looking at question and passage, paraphrase the answer without using the answer choices.
