2 Types

 Relative Dating  Absolute Dating

 1. Law of superposition – youngest layer on top; oldest layer on bottom.

 2. Disturbed Rock layers –  Rock layers are horizontal, if not, there has been a disturbance. 4 ways – Faults, Intrusion, Folding, and Tilting.  ERROR - Unconformity

 Draw the flow map in your notes.

 Geologist use relative dating to determine the order in which events happen.

 The principle of superposition states that in undisturbed rock sequences, younger layers lie above older layers.

 Folding and tilting are 2 events that disturb rock layers.

 Faults and intrusions are 2 features that disturb rock layers.

 The known rock and fossil record is indicated by the geologic column.

 Geologist examine the relationship between rock layers and the structures that cut across them in order to determine relative age.
