Note-Taking Strategies Four Types

Note-Taking O Note-taking skills help students to O Actively listen to lectures O Read textbooks and data for meaning O Assimilate vocabulary and fact-based data into a network of thought O Study for tests without the need to cram O Set up notes to coordinate with the pure essay form O Gain a strong fact base through an Optimal Review Cycle O Do original research by setting up investigative data in the student’s own words.

Key-Word O Key-word note-taking is a simple format that involves writing three key words down from each sentence read. O Key-word note-taking is written in outline form. O It allows students to easily write summaries about texts.

Key-Word O When choosing your three key words, it is important to choose words that will trigger your memory regarding what that sentence said.

Cornell Note-taking O The Cornell method of note-taking was created by Walter Pauk. O Cornell focuses on basic cues, point form notes, and quick summarizing skills. O For the Cornell note-taking method, you draw a vertical line on your paper to make a small column and a big column. In the bigger column on the right, you would put all your notes about what the lesson is about. On the left side, you write the main idea of the notes. Once the topic changes, skip a few lines.

O Basic Cues (left column): O Main ideas O Questions that connect points O Diagrams O Prompts to help you study When do I write this? After class during review

Cornell Note-taking O Point Form Notes (right column): O Write basic notes from the class/lecture here O Develop shorthand symbols for quick reference. O Point form O Key words/ideas/dates When do I write this? During Class

Cornell Note-Taking O Summary (bottom of notes): O After class summary. Quickly summarize the notes on this page. When do I write this? After class during review

Classic Note-taking Method O Classic essay style note-taking follows the classic outline style and pre-sets your notes to help recall significant topics, sub-topics, and evidence & examples to support your written perspective.

Classic Note-taking Method O This style of note-taking is good for historically, politically, and economically classes and may be needed in an effort to take a specific position in an essay. O In addition, this style is a good template for day to day coursework that includes text, reading, and lecture. Specifically if course evaluation is based on persuasive essays, source analysis, or multiple choice testing.

Classic Note-taking Method O Topic: what the lecture, lesson, writing is mainly about O Sub-topic: one of the divisions into which a main topic may be divided. O Evidence & Examples: support these topics/sub-topics

Classic Note-taking Method O For the Classic Note-taking, you will break down a writing into the different paragraphs. After doing so, you can identify the topic, sub-topics, and evidence/examples in the text. O SUMMARIZE
