The King & His Kingdom John 18:33-37

The Conversation John 18:33-35 Pilate’s task: assessing threats Pilate’s task: assessing threats Jesus doesn’t look like a threat. Jesus doesn’t look like a threat. “What have you done?” “What have you done?”

“OF THIS WORLD” A Quick Tour of John’s Gospel

“Of This World” This World is the place of rebellion against God. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

“Of This World” Jesus enters this World, sent by the Father’s love. John 10:36 “him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world” John 10:36 “him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world” John 11:27 “you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” John 11:27 “you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” John 12:46 “I have come into the world as light” John 12:46 “I have come into the world as light” John 16:28 “I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” John 16:28 “I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

“Of This World” Jesus is different in origin and nature from this world. John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” John 14:30-31 “… the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me” John 14:30-31 “… the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me” John 15:18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own” John 15:18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own”

“Of This World” This World is either saved or judged by Jesus. John 3:16-19 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. … And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” John 3:16-19 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. … And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” John 12:31 “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.” John 12:31 “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.” John 16:11 “the ruler of this world is judged.” John 16:11 “the ruler of this world is judged.”

“Of This World” Jesus’ mission remains in this world. John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 16:33 “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 17:14-18 “they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. … As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” John 17:14-18 “they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. … As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

NOW BACK TO JOHN 18

“Of This World” John 18:36 Christ’s kingdom does not originate in this world. Christ’s kingdom does not originate in this world. Christ’s kingdom is not ruled by this world’s power. Christ’s kingdom is not ruled by this world’s power. Christ’s kingdom does not exert this world’s power. Christ’s kingdom does not exert this world’s power. Christ’s kingdom certainly rules in this world! Christ’s kingdom certainly rules in this world! The kingdoms of this world think they are judging Christ, but they are on trial before their king.

“I Am a King” John 18:37 Nothing could be truer! Nothing could be truer! Angels declared it at his birth. Angels declared it at his birth. The Father declared it throughout his life. The Father declared it throughout his life. The Son himself declared it in his death. The Son himself declared it in his death. The Spirit declared it in his Resurrection. The Spirit declared it in his Resurrection.

Acts 4:24-30 “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’ for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
