The firsts signs of carnival in the world date back to 4000 years ago. The Egyptians started to celebrate this period of feast with dance, songs and gifts offered to Isis, the goddess of fruitfulness and life. In ancient Greece, instead, the carnival took place in two different periods, winter and spring, as a celebration of Bacchus.

Also the Romans celebrated carnival and they even built temples on this occasion. The tradition of carnival was then passed down spread in all the Italian peninsula. Centuries later the Roman Catholic Church, which couldn’t prevent the pagan celebrations from taking place, succeeded in turning the Carnival into a catholic celebration.

Now the Carnival is a really happy moment of the year. In many towns or villages a lot of people work all year to build carnival floats for the parades. The floats also compete with with each other and the winners are awarded at the end of the celebrations. Every year thousands of people attend these parades and competitions.

Nowadays young people do not celebrate Carnival in the same way as in the past: teenagers do not dress up, but only children like to disguise as their favourite cartoon heroes.
