Quick review: identify this stage of the diploid cell cycle.
Meiosis Notes Cell division to form the gametes, sperm (male gamete) and egg (female gamete). Normal cells are diploid (2n): 2 copies of every gene. Gametes.
CELL REPRODUCTION MEIOSIS.
MEIOSIS.
Unit 3 Part II – The Cell.  A form of cell division happening in sexually reproducing organisms.  Consists of 2 consecutive cell divisions (meiosis.
Cell Division - Meiosis
 Normal human body cells each contain 46 chromosomes.  The cell division process that body cells undergo is called mitosis and produces daughter cells.
Meiosis Division of Sex Cells. Meiosis  A process of reduction division in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through the separation.
Formation of Haploid Cells Meiosis- for of cell division that halves the number of chromosomes when forming specialized reproductive cells such as gametes.
Chapter 5 Part II: Meiosis
Produces “gametes”: sex cells Male: sperm X and Y Female: eggs.
Reproduction of Cells Asexual Vs Sexual Reproduction.
Meiosis. Meiosis is referred to as reduction division because meiosis results in haploid cells called gametes (sex cells). Male and female gametes fuse.
Some Vocab Diploid (2n): two sets of chromosomes – You are diploid ( 46 chromosomes) 1 set from mom 1 set from dad Haploid (n): one set of chromosomes.
11-4 Meiosis I. Chromosome Number A. Homologous- corresponding chromosomes, one from the male and one from the female. B. Diploid - A cell that contains.
Meiosis Meiosis – M phase that occurs in the ovaries (females) or testes (males) of an organism to create gametes or sex cells Produces 4 haploid cells.
Section 8-3 Meiosis. Obj 9: List and describe the phases of meiosis Meiosis I: Preceded by copying of DNA in interphase.
Meiosis: Creation of the Sex Cells. What is Meiosis?? Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Occurs.
Chromosomes & Meiosis. MAIN IDEAS You have body cells and gametes. Your cells have autosomes and sex chromosomes. Body cells are diploid; gametes are.

Meiosis pp

Double mitosis Results in haploid cells (n)  gametes 2n  4n  (2) 2n  (4) n two stages of meiosis (I and II) CLIP

Meiosis I 1. Similar to the phases of mitosis 2. 2n  4n  (2) 2n 3. separating into homologous chromosomes

Two important things occur in meiosis I that do not occur in mitosis crossing over and independent assortment

Synapsis: during prophase I chromosomes line up with homologues via corresponding genes to make a tetrad Crossing-over: random exchange of genetic material during synapsis - homologous pairs overlap and twist on each other (not always the exact same spot!!) Independent assortment: random separation of the homologous chromosomes occur during anaphase I

Meiosis II: begins right after meiosis I 1. (2) 2n  (4) n ; 4 haploid cells 2. separating into single chromatids CLIP

Meiosis is the formation of Gametes spermatogenesis (testes): males produce sperm cells oogenesis (ovaries): females make eggs and produce one egg and 3 polar bodies (useless) at the end of one cycle of meiosis- occurs only at ovulation
