The Wilkses Part 1 Brandon, Hannah, Andre, Daisy

Summary ● As the raft pulls up to a town, the King and the Duke meet a very gossipy young man who explains to them that there has been a death of a well known, wealthy man in town. ● Immediately the two con men knew what they were going to do. As the young man before had explained, Mr.Wilks had two brother from england who were supposed to be on their way. ● Instead King and Duke take the role of the brothers of Wilks and inherits what was left for them, they begin selling most of the property. ● During a conversation with one of the youngest daughters of Mr.Wilk, she can easily spot that Huck is not from England and accuses him of fraud but one of the eldest sisters tells her to respect the guest and in the end she apologies for being disrespectful and takes back what she said.

Summary Pt. 2 ● Huck feels guilty after the girl gets in trouble because he knows that she is right. Knowing how wrong it is of the con men, Huck steals the money they made and gives it to one of the daughters and explains to them what is really going on. ● But when the family finds out what the con men are really up to, the con men were lucky enough to escape.

Explanation of Huck’s development or lesson He learns that the people in society are not always the best role models. “..took one sight, and then they burst out a-crying …” “ They’ve got a good thing here, and they ain’t a-goin to leave till they’ve played this family and this town…” “I’ll steal it and hide it…when I’m down the river, I'll write a letter and tell Mary Jane where it’s hid.”

Theme The theme of chapters is that even though Huck could have probably just let his friends be happy and stayed out of things he chose to do the right thing and get the money back and give it to its owner. “I crept to their doors and listened; they was snoring. So I tiptoed along, and got downstairs all right…” (Twain p.766). In this quote it shows that Huck even though having to sneak around his friends he still does it because it is the right thing.

Mood The mood for chapters is suspicious “I got to steal that money somehow; and I got to steal it some way that they won’t suspicion that I done it” (Twain 175). ❏ This quote explains how they were stealing the money in a way they wouldn’t be caught and this is what makes the mood suspicious.

Tone ● The tone of chapters is mischievous ● “Duke dressed Jim up in King Lear’s outfit-it was a long curtain-calico gown...like a man that’s been drownded nine days” (Twain 156). ● “I’ll steal it and hide it; and by and by, when I am away down the river..”( Twain 175). ❏ These quotes explain how The boys are getting into trouble and the chapters a tone of mischievous. They are stealing money and pretending to be people they are not and being frauds.

Diction The diction in these chapters rather illiterate and childish which helps the readers imagine the scene much more clearly. “As they was starting down the ladder the duke he chuckles again, and says…”(Twain p.792) “They buried him, and we come back home, and I couldn’t rest easy…”(Twain p.781)
