Morning Prayers - Tuesday In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN (Join me in offering our day to God.) My God, I thank you for the gift of another day to praise you. I offer you all my prayers works, joys, and sufferings today. Amen. (Let us ask the angels for their intercession on our behalf) Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light to guard, to rule and guide. Amen. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the power of God - cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. (Let us pray.) Dear Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to know the difference between right and wrong, and the courage always to do what is right, Through Christ, our Lord. AMEN In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN (Please stand for the pledge) I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Class Notes: Beginnings of Slavery in the Americas MI 1. European diseases wiped out most of the Native American population, causing colonists to look for a new labor force. Supporting details: 1.Most European colonies profited from plantations, mines, and other businesses that needed a lot of workers (a large labor force). 2.They used natives to work for them. 3.However, Europeans brought diseases like smallpox, measles, and typhus that the natives were not immune to. They eventually became sick and died. Over a million natives died in less than 50 years. 4.A lot of the colonies had large plantations. The Spanish and the Portuguese relied on sugar plantations. The English had tobacco plantations. These plantations needed a lot of workers. 5.The Europeans eventually turned to West Africans for the labor they needed. West Africans were already immune to these diseases.

MI 2. Europeans enslaved millions of Africans and sent them to work in their colonies. Supporting details: 1.The Spanish and the Portuguese were first to bring Africans into the Americas as slaves. The Dutch and the English also eventually did the same. 2.Middle Passage: enslaved Africans had very little room in the ship (a foot and ½), chained together, many died (1/6), no bathrooms, not a lot of food, very easy for disease to spread (cold, flu, etc), suffocated. 3.African Diaspora: out of Africa  Americas: Portuguese sugar plantations in Brazil, mines in Peru and Mexico, depended on location of plantations, 3 million went to British and French colonies in Latin America and Carribeans, more than 600,000 were sent to British colonies (present day US), 2 million to New Spain, 4 million went to Brazil 4.Treatment once in the Americas: treated harshly, some masters gave them food and clothes so that they would survive and work for what was paid for them, masters would not get charged with murder if they kill a slave from brutal punishment, escapees would be harshly punished/killed, branded, whipped, tortured.

MI 3. Slaves in the Americas created a distinct culture. 1.Enslaved Africans had different cultures and languages because they were from many different nations. But they also shared many customs, which eventually developed into a new African American culture. 2.Families were an important refuge (a place of safety/emotional escape) that slaveholders could not completely control. However, slave owners could break up families. 3.Religion was another important refuge: mix of Christianity and African religions. Allowed expression through songs and folktales. Stories of hope, sorrow, agony, and joy. 4.Art and dance were also important. Helped build community.
