VOA3R: Virtual Open Access Agriculture & Aquaculture Repository sharing scientific and scholarly research related to agriculture, food, and environment PRESENTER’S NAME INTRODUCTION TO VOA3R

Open Access to Scientific Information This program is funded by ICT Policy Support Programme The ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT-PSP) aims at stimulating innovation and competitiveness through the wider uptake and best use of ICT by citizens, governments and businesses. VOA3R – General Information

VOA3R in EU

Improve the spread of European Agriculture and Aquaculture research results by using an innovative approach to sharing open access research products VOA3R objective

VOA3R activities  Platform to integrate metadata from existing OA repositories  Meta-model of research processes & lifecycle  Analysis of existing & alternative approaches to the evaluation of scholarly research Experiment with alternatives to peer review  Ontologies to match the meta-model of research work  Metadata profiles  Adaption of existing systems to comply and interoperate with the VOA3R service  Real-user pilots with target communities  Roadmap & guidelines for the evolution of the platform

The situation today  Novel search engines as:  Databases as:  Citation systems as:  Indexes as: Google Scholar PubMed CiteULike DOAJ provide open scholarly content to large masses

Significant effort is still required to retrieve relevant information for targeted needs and cover only some of the processes and tasks that are inherent to the nature of research work: highly specific literature analysis and contrast, preprint publishing, informal feedback, different forms of peer evaluation and post-archival assessment What about researchers & practitioners?

  Will enable researchers to: formulate their information needs in terms of elements in their field variables, techniques, assessment methods, kinds of objects of interest, etc. combined with topical descriptions as expressed in metadata.   Re-using existing and mature metadata and semantics technology advanced.   Development of a community-focused integrated platform for the retrieval of relevant open content and data that includes explicit models of the scholarly methods and procedures. Benefits from VOA3R(1/2)

  Community approach will enable enhancement of information seeking with extended evaluation elements ratings, public reviews, social tagging links to supporting or conflicting reports, etc. complement and go beyond the traditional, anonymous peer review process.   The technology used will itself become open source can be adopted by enterprises (including SMEs) or other kinds of institutions as a value-added, community-oriented model for open access content Benefits from VOA3R(2/2)

CONNECTION WITH ORGANIC.EDUNET the technology, the models and service already deployed in the context of the Organic.Edunet project

VOA3R Services  Development of new ontologies and models, specific to research work and research processes.  Tailoring the semantic repository to ontologies of research-scholarly work.  Extension or specialization of existing search interfaces to make them specific to the processes and tasks of scholarly or academic work.  New integration mechanism with systems that go beyond being OAI-PMH providers, as they may be necessary with open journal or open conference systems.  Innovative community functionality  Adaptation of metadata schemes, developments of new profiles, application to existing repositories.

VOA3R Innovations  Providing search and navigation mechanisms that exploits representations of research work in the field, thus allowing advanced search for targeted research needs.  Combining search and navigation criteria based on elements of research work with domain ontologies in the addressed disciplines.  Extending the paradigm of an open access repository to that of a community of scholars and researchers that interact, rate and comment on scientific outputs.  Integrating in the service the research publication process from information seeking to final publishing and archival, including pre-print archival, reviews and intermediate stages.

TECHNICAL ISSUES(1/2)  Based on proven metadata federation technology and semantic metadata repository technology that was developed by the FP6 STREP LUISA project and has been used in the Organic.Edunet project.  Technology that integrates conventional Web portal open source technology and existing systems based on standards for metadata interoperability OAI-PMH, etc.  VOA3R focuses on agriculture and aquaculture but its technology and approach could be transposed to other domains seamlessly.

  New community functionality specific to the domain of scientific/scholarly processes combination of conventional Web portal technology and the semantic and social components that provide the innovative features.   Adaptations of metadata schemes, new profiles and application of them to existing repositories   Relies in a mature architecture already used in the Organic.Edunet project, a main research outcome of UAH and GRNET. TECHNICAL ISSUES(2/2)

main innovations of VOA3R regarding the open access philosophy Introduction of community aspects as a desirable first-class element in open access. Explicit modeling of processes and elements in research work, as a tool to enhance search and filtering of scholarly content. CONTRIBUTION TO OPEN ACCESS

Workplan of the project VOA3R a 3 year project

VOA3R: NEED ANALYSIS study requirements of stakeholders with regard to the deployment of the open access service/platform Set up the vision regarding desired goals, expectations and outcomes Review and analyse current requirements identified from the experience of partners related to producers and consumers of content Carry out stakeholder meetings to discuss, validate and enhance requirements to reflect the VOA3R vision
