Division of Integers

Today I will be able to apply my knowledge of division of positive whole numbers to solve problems involving the division of rational numbers.

What do you notice? Solve the following problems. 1.21/7 2. (-35)/5 3. (-18)/6

What did we notice? When we divided two positive integers we got a positive quotient or answer. When we divided one positive and one negative integer we got a negative quotient. When we divided two negative integers we got a positive quotient.

Just like addition and subtraction of integers there are rules for multiplying integers We can use the following concepts to help us remember the outcome of multiplying integers. 1.When a good thing happens to a good person we believe that they deserve it and it’s a good thing. 15/5 = +3 1.When a bad thing happens to a bad person we believe that they deserve it and it’s a good thing. (-15)/(-5) = (+3) 1.When a good thing happens to a bad person we believe that they don’t deserve it and it’s a bad thing. 15/(-5) = (-3) 1.When a bad thing happens to a good person we believe that they don’t deserve it and it’s a bad thing. (-15)/5 = (-3)

Rules for dividing integers To divide integers, always divide the absolute values and use these rules to determine the sign of the answer: 1.The quotient of two positive integers or two negative integers is positive. 2.The quotient of a positive integer and a negative integer is negative.

Let’s Practice (-63)/7 = I-63I/I7I 63/7 Negative thing happens to a good person that’s bad, so my quotient is negative. Answer: -7

Discuss this in your groups (-81)/(-9) Answer:

Your turn Take turns holding up the positive and negative sign at your tables to show the sign of the quotient of the following equations. For example: If I showed the equation 45/5 we would hold up the __________ sign.

(-72)/(-9)

35/7

(-49)/7

(-81)/8

(-24)/(-4)

120/12

(-28)/(-7)

Solving Real World Word Problems When reading real world word problems you need to look for the following clue words for multiplication and division problems. Multiplication: times, product, of, multiplied by, by (dimension), area, volume, per, each Division: quotient of, divided, split, separated, cut up, parts, sharing something equally, average

Watch me The temperature drops 2°F each hour. What is the total change in temperature after 12 hours?

Watch Me Manuel bought some strawberries on his credit card for $75. If his 3 friends decide to split the cost between them to pay for the strawberries, how much will each person owe?

Your Turn Sylvia burns 6 calories per minute when she runs. How many calories does she burn when she runs for 15 minutes?

Your Turn A family of 3 shares the minutes on a cellular telephone equally. Suppose the cellular phone has 675 minutes per month. How many minutes does each person get to use each month?

Your Turn Chandler drives his car 20 miles round trip to work everyday. How many total miles does he drive to and from work in 5 days?

Exit Ticket Explain how you determine the quotient of two integers.
