Strategies for Taking Standardized Tests

T’was the night before testing when all through the house, not a creature was heard, not even a mouse.

The students were nestled all snug in their beds, while all kinds of knowledge filled up their heads. 5X0=0 -en is made of plants can grow without soil

While at West Elementary they had learned all they needed, the students were ready and had the knowledge they needed.

They awoke the next morning ready for the day, had a healthy breakfast and were on their way.

When they got to the school they walked down the hall, their teacher’s were ready for the daily roll call.

The day was off and computers all aglow, with stories and questions of things that they know.

They read every story they read every word, the knew all the questions and boy it felt good.

The students used paper and pencils and more, the students used rulers, blocks and tools from before.

The raised their hand, they did their best, the students rocked that state assessment test!

The Morning of Testing Start your day as you always do. Eat a good breakfast. Think of what you will do to relax after you get home from school. Think Positive!Think Positive!

UNRAAVAL Underline the title. Now predict the passage. Run through & number the paragraphs. Are you reading the questions? Are the important words circled? Venture through the passage. Eliminate incorrect answers. Let the questions be answered.

Are we communicating? Make sure you understand what the question is asking. Be sure you are responding to the question that is being asked.

Multiple Choice Questions If you do not understand the directions, ask for help. allRead the question and all answer choices before marking anything.

Multiple Choice Questions Do not change your answers unless you are very uncertain about your first answer choice. Answer every question. Make the most intelligent guess you can.

The Process of Elimination After you have been through all of the questions once, go back and find questions you have some knowledge about and eliminate choices that you know are incorrect. I know C isn’t the answer!

Pace Yourself Don’t spend too much time on any one question. Do your best and then move on. Answer the easiest questions first, but be sure to go back to those questions you skipped.

Skip, Return, Check When you finish, check to make sure you have answered all questions. Reread every question and verify your answer.

Reading Passages Be sure to read the entire passage, you may need to use the scroll tool to read to the end. After reading a question, find the answer in the text, even if you think you already know. If you come to a vocabulary word you are unsure of—WRITE IT DOWN. If it is in a question, ask for the question to be read aloud.

Reading Passages cluesWhen there are several questions about a reading passage or chart, look for clues in other questions that will help you with those items about which you are unsure.

Math Computation When using scratch paper on a math test, double check to make sure that you have copied the problem correctly from the test booklet!

Math Computation Line up place value correctly on your scratch paper (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) or the answer will be incorrect.

Math Computation If your answer does not match one of the choices, reread the problem, recopy the numbers, and try solving it again.

Do your best and you will see, you’ll rock those assessments with a bit of ease!
