Israel… Or Palestine? Identify the source of conflict that still exists between Israel and Palestine Evaluate who has rights to the region

Who does USA support? How would that affect the outcome of war between Israel and Palestine? Looking at the symbols, who is starting this conflict? What is this cartoon saying about the weapons of both sides?

1000 BC 400’s AD 1300’s AD Hebrews/Jews Muslims Christians and Jews Lands Changing Hands Israel now Palestine  Israel Israel 

How Did It All Start? Forced out of Israel by Romans and then Muslims, Jews immigrate, most to Europe Theodore Herzl- tired of feeling like an outsider everywhere he went Began the Zionist movement for Jews to regain control of Israel, their homeland, around 1900

Zionism Speeds Up WW2 European Jews facing exile and murder After WWII, many Jews fled back to Israel (Palestine) Israel was called Palestine because it was inhabited by Arab Muslims Big Problem: 2 conflicting faiths in one place 2 Jewish Claims: -Biblically the land belongs to Jews -Ours first 2 Muslim claims: -We’ve lived here for hundreds of years -We now have holy sites in Israel

After WW2 United Nations partitions (divides) Palestine w/out asking the people already living there The Jews and Muslims must share Israel Israel is only 8,000 sq miles (OK is almost 70,000 sq miles) More Jews continue to immigrate back to Israel Jews regain control of more land Whose Land Is It Anyway?

After Israel Became a Nation War began immediately with the surrounding Arab/Muslim nations of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan Israel won, and took more land Whose Land Is It Anyway? Palestinian refugees, 1948

Six Day Way, 1967 War between Israel vs. its neighbors, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan Israel won—took more land, bulldozed 500 Palestinian villages and forced 700,000 Palestinian refugees out of the area. United Nations stepped in to negotiate a peace, but it failed—Israel would not give back land. Whose Land Is It Anyway?

Camp David Accords: The first good agreement between Israel and an Arab country. U.S President Jimmy Carter worked with Israel’s and Egypt’s leaders to get this agreement in It said: Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. Egypt agreed to officially recognize Israel as an independent nation. (Before this, all major Arab nations had insisted that Israel did NOT have the ri ght to exist.) Whose Land Is It Anyway?

Since Camp David Accords, violence has not entirely ceased. There have been major outbreaks of violence and periods of peace, but tension always exists. Palestinian Arabs are only allowed to live in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israelis continue to build “settlements” in these lands. Israel’s capital, Jerusalem, is divided among 3 religions Israel is surrounded by Muslim nations on all sides Whose Land Is It Anyway?

Gaza Strip & West Bank

Who’s Winning? Israel is supported by the USA; they have more advanced weaponry and other help Why Does the USA support Israel? Islamic nations have historically been enemies of the US Especially after the Holocaust, the US feels Jews deserve their homeland back USA is still known as a ‘Christian’ nation; the Bible does grant the land to the Jews
