Research and Training Support to Build African Capacity in Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators* Tashmia Ismail UNU-MERIT * Funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Grant

Description Two components 1.UNU-MERIT capacity building project 2.Research conducted by case study teams – Both are linked Capacity Building – What capacities where developed? Call for Proposal to conduct cases studies – Capacity to respond Case study work – Training in the link to indicators and innovation Analysis of results – Review and mentoring

Description Capacity Building – con’t – How was it done? Expert team of academics* acted as – Evaluators of responses to the Call September 2009 » Most responses where eliminated – Advisors on improving the response to the Call » Four projects were approved – Trainers dealing with innovation and indicators, September2010 » Training workshop in Pretoria for three teams » DEIP course in Senegal for one team – Mentors following a workshop to present reports » All reports accepted by Globelics » All will appear as UNU-MERIT Working Papers » A special issue of a journal is being discussed *UNU-MERIT Principal Investigator + four academics

Description Research of case study teams – Innovation in ICT services in the informal economy of Senegal – Telephone banking in South Africa – Farmer initiated crop innovation in KwaZulu-Natal – User innovation in firms in Maputo Province, Mozambique

Outcomes Capacity building – A new cohort of researchers able to respond to a Call for Proposals, to conduct research, analyse data and to prepare reports for publication. Not all of these capacities can be attributed to the project. Some were there before. However, the project contributed to career development of all participants Research – New knowledge about subjects studied Link to innovation and potential indicators Some policy influence

Future Prospects Project influenced IDRC in its creation of a new programme: Inclusive Innovation for Development (IID) – IDRC will have a meeting on IID after Globelics – The plan would be to develop a proposal for a new project based on this as part of IID Michiko and Mulu can comment
