Participation Inquiry Iowa Assessments are …… just one piece of the puzzle. Attendance Quizzes Classroom-based Tests Peer Work Assignments Observations Projects Other Assessments MAP Performances Discussions Portfolios Lab Work Iowa Assessments

Individual Growth Model – Like MAP Expected Growth vs. Absolute Growth Providing a Baseline for Future Growth The New Iowa Assessment: Aligning with the IA Core

NSS vs. NPR NPR does not determine Proficiency NPR still offers a national comparison NSS determines Proficiency The New Iowa Assessment: Aligning with the IA Core

 Standards-based interpretations  Accountability  Growth  College Readiness  Relative Comparisons Reports to Support Uses of the Iowa Assessments

 Determine which standards have been mastered by the student, classroom or school  Determine which standards need additional focus  Compare progress among students Standards-Based Interpretations

 How are our students doing?  And, why? Accountability Classroom District State Nation

 Determine expected growth for all students  Set goals for a student based on any starting place  Measure student growth using vertically articulated standards Measure Growth

 Predict college readiness indicators  Help students plan the appropriate coursework  Identify students that are not “on track” College Readiness

 Determine student strengths with respect to the school, district, state and nation  Use to evaluate programs, set expectations and determine interventions Relative Comparisons

 Change in student achievement over time  Focus is on individual students or matched groups of students (cohorts) What is Growth?

 Individuals learn at different rates  Learning is continuous  Focus on growth avoids arbitrary labels  Puts focus on setting long-term goals  Understanding of progress towards college and career-readiness Why is Growth Important?

 Set goals  Monitor progress Using Growth Information

Reading

 Proficiency is no longer based on the 41 st Percentile (NPR).  Proficiency is now determined by a specific National Standard Score (NSS). Reading Example: 4 th grade in the Fall proficient is th grade in the Fall proficient is Proficiency Examples NPR vs NSS

Example for Reading at 6 th Grade: Achievement Level Corresponding 2000 NPR 2011 NPR  Note: Comparisons to prior year’s scores may be difficult to make due to the new assessment and re-norming Comparative Percentiles

 The new Iowa Assessment is closely aligned with the Iowa Core Standards.  Test questions may be more demanding than in the past.  NSS is now used to determine proficiency and growth.  The re-norming may cause comparisons to prior years to be misleading. Key Points to Share

With the state of Iowa in the middle of determining what assessment protocols will be used to measure student progress…  Iowa Assessments  SMARTER Balance  End of Course Assessments  ACT for all 11 th graders  Third grade reading assessment Key Points to Share

… the district remains committed to multiple measures to determine how to support and advance students:  MAP  IA Assessments  District Assessments  Formative and Summative Assessments  Daily performance indicators Remember: Just one piece of the puzzle! Key Points to Share

 Focus is on the growth of each individual student  Reinforces the importance of differentiated instruction  Expected and Absolute Growth; NSS vs. NPR Key Points to Remember
