Midterm Review Scripture Studies

Saints  Refer to your saint from your written report to write a short essay on his/her life.

Infancy Narratives  How many?  Authors?  Differences?

1. God is our Father (Genesis 5:3) and we were created to have a loving relationship with Him. 2. We are like God – intelligence, free will, capacity to love. Human families image the Trinity. Human nature is between angels and beasts. 3. Human life is sacred – no matter how deformed, criminal, sick, small, or old. No human is beyond redemption. – CCC Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. 4. Our work has special value/dignity – because we bear the image of God – We work in imitation of God our Father (work of creation) – They worked in the Garden of Eden! “The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.” - Genesis 2:15 Meant to “work” in and “guard” it. 1. In His Image and Likeness - notes 9/23 4

Adam was commanded to protect the garden The serpent was a powerful evil creature “You will die” refers to a spiritual death, and an eventual physical death – Genesis 2:16-17: The LORD God gave man this order: "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and bad. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die.“ – Mary and Jesus did not have to die (or decay) because they did not disobey God – Satan mixes truth with lies to get us to swallow the lie! They commit original sin – trusting their pride more than God 2. The Fall – Genesis 3:1-7 – notes 9/28 5

The Expulsion- Genesis 3:8-24 God questions Adam and Eve, giving them a chance to confess (they don’t) God curses the serpent God promises that although the serpent will bruise the heel of the woman’s offspring, the woman’s offspring will crush his head – the “First Gospel” or Protoevangelium Adam and Eve bring suffering into the world by their sin: – Work is made hard for Adam – Childbirth is made hard for Eve – Relationships will be marred by sin (husband would rule over wife, her desire be for him) – We will die physically Suffering will be a cure for the illness of original sin – by suffering Jesus will overcome original sin. Evil enters the world – Cain kills Abel 6

Rebellion of Adam and Eve and its consequences -sin of disobedience toward God -rejection of a God centered life and the choice of a self-centered life -loss of paradise -original grace, holiness, and justice -suffering, death, a tendency toward sin, need for salvation

God created eveything that is good. Explain why evil is in the world.

3. STORY OF THE ISRAEL ITES (Oct) 1. Moses’ mother gives up her son to save his life. 2. Rescued from the river 3. Raised as an Egyptian by the pharaoh’s daughter. 4. Pharaoh changes his mind and goes after the Israelites. 9. Moses parts the Red Sea. The Israelites pass; the Egyptians drown.

10. Life is difficult in the desert. Israelites complain. 11. God sends manna, quail and water. 12. Moses goes up to Mount Sinai to pray and receives the Ten Commandments. 13. Meanwhile Aaron builds the golden calf and the Israelites revert back to idol worship. 14. Moses comes down from the mountain, gets angry at his people, smashes the tablets. 15. Moses goes back to Mount Sinai and receives another two tablets. 16. Covenant is ratified with sacrifice and a meal. 17. Israelites wander desert for forty years. 18.
