Biochemistry 2-4 ENZYMES AND CHEMICAL REACTIONS

 Atoms rearranged  Substance changes into a new one  Bonds must be broken and new bonds must form.  Ex. Water separated into hydrogen/oxygen (electrolysis) Chemical change

 Reactants (left of arrow)  (materials needed or that you start with)  Products (right of arrow)  (what is produced or you end up with ) Chemical Reactions involve…

 Color change (rusting/flame test)  Precipitate formation (solid product formed from 2 liquids)  Gas formation (bubbles)  Temperature change (heat/light) Evidence of Chemical reactions:

Activation Energy  Energy that is needed to get a reaction started. (ex- lighting a match)

*Increasing the rate of a reaction Increased concentration of a material= faster reaction Increased surface area of a material = faster reaction Increased temperature of a material= faster reaction Catalyst- a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction. Ex. enzymes

Types of Chemical Reactions *Chemistry is Amazing!

Enzymes  Biological catalysts (speed up the rate of chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy.)

Enzymes  Enzymes work best at body temp  Cells contain proteins that can turn enzymes “on” or “off”  Enzymes help to transfer cell information, release energy for the cell and body, regular chemical processes (digestion), provide necessary material for cell growth and development.
