Presentation transcript:

Objective: Students will learn tools in Photoshop to manipulate images and make the unrealistic look possible. Bellwork: What are some unrealistic photos you’ve seen created using Photoshop?

 One thing that makes Photoshop fun is the ability to combine pictures together.  You could combine a picture of yourself and the moon to make a picture of you walking on the moon.  You could combine picture of yourself and your favorite celebrity to make yourselves BFFs  We are going to combine pictures to make it appear someone is walking through a doorway into a tropical paradise.

 The first thing we will need to explore in order to make our unbelievable scene is to remove the background from a picture.  Open Photoshop  File Open within Photoshop  From the Niebur Handouts folder – Multimedia – Photoshop – open the picture door.

 When you open a picture in Photoshop, it automatically becomes the background.  The Background layer it locked.  To remove parts of the picture, you MUST unlock the background  Double click the background layer and rename the layer Door  (notice the layer no longer had a lock)

 There are four different tools that you can use to remove the background. I want you to experiment with each as shown below:

 Use the Zoom Tool to magnify the Top Right window pane.  Select the Magic Wand Tool from the Tools panel.  Adjust the Tolerance on the Options Bar.  The higher the number the more shades of the color that will be selected.  Click on the brick wall that appears through the glass, to select an area.  Press Delete the remove the area.  This area is now transparent which is shown as a checkerboard.

 Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool  Click and drag to draw a box around any pieces of background left in the top Right windowpane.  Press delete to remove the area.  The deleted area is no transparent this is shown with a checkerboard pattern.

 Use the Zoom Tool to magnify the top Left windowpane.  Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool  Click on each corner of the windowpane.  Press Delete to remove the area.  The deleted area is now transparent, this is shown with a checkerboard pattern.  Repeat these steps to remove the background in the bottom Left window pane.

 Use the Zoom tool to magnify the bottom Right windowpane.  Select the Magnetic Lasso Tool  Click to create a starting point.  To trace the window pane freehand, drag the mouse pointer around the outline of the shape.  To anchor a point manually, click the mouse button.  To delete a point you just added, press the Delete key.  To draw a straight line, press the Shift key.  To complete the outline, click the starting point.  Press Delete to remove the selected area.

 Adjust the zoom level of the door picture so you can see it in its entirety on the page.  File – Place – select either tropic 1 or tropic 2  Resize, Rotate, and move the picture to position it inside the window panes.  When finished click the Commit transform tool (Check mark) in the Options Bar.  The Tropic picture is it’s own layer, move that layer so it is below the Door layer.

 If you use your Filter Effects to soften the edges this will make the photo look more realistic.  Select the Door Layer from the Layers Panel  From the Filter menu, select Blur, and then Glaussian Blur  Drag the slider to adjust the amount of blur, and then click OK

 Select the Door Layer from the Layers panel  From the image menu, select Adjustments and use one or more commands to make the door look great.  From the layers menu, select Layer Style and use one or more of the layer styles to make the Door look magical.

 From the File menu, select Save As  In the Save in: box, select the your student account  In the Save as dialog box, type Last Name First Initial Background in the File Name box  Select JPEG in the format box and click ok  Click ok when the JPEG Options box is displayed

 Create your own picture (you may need to remove some background from BOTH photos)  Some fun ideas:  Save this as Last Name First Initial Combined Hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa Vacuum the desert Place yourself behind bars in a jail cell Climb Mount Everest Walk on the Moon Party with your favorite celebrity Have a wild animal as a pet
