DNA Scientists: Oswald Avery By: Cliff Henrice, Dillon Himes, and Jared Weber

Main Achievement  He found an inheritance molecule of DNA by using types of pneumonia.

Griffith’s Experiment  His experiment involved mice with two types of pneumonia, a virulent and a non- virulent kind.  He then injected the virulent pneumonia into one of the nice and it died.  He the heated up the disease to kill it and then inject it into the mouse, this mouse lived.

Griffith’s Experiment (Continued)  He then injected a non-virulent pneumonia that had been heated and the mouse died.  He thought that the dead virulent bacterial had passes on a characteristic to the non-virulent one to make it virulent. He thought that this was a characteristic of a inheritance molecule.

Experiment  He continued Griffith’s experiment to see what a inheritance molecule was and if he could find one.  He destroyed lipids, ribonucleic acids, carbohydrates, and proteins of virulent pneumonia to see if he could find the DNA.

Scientists Relations  He continued Griffith’s experiment to see what a inheritance molecule has.  Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase continued his research in 1952.
