These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. WHAT KIND OF WORLD WILL OUR STUDENTS LIVE IN? 24 October 2003 Gautam Sen  More complex and dynamic global interdependence - between nature and human societies, and - between nations, institutions and communities.  Greater demand for skills of collaboration, resolving conflicts and building peace and justice.  Greater need for intercultural understanding as well as for cultural self-confidence.

HOW IS AN IB STUDENT LIKELY TO BE BETTER PREPARED FOR SUCH A WORLD?  More complex and dynamic global interdependence between nations and societies  Deeper and more complex knowledge in three subjects of six; at least one of six must be a social science.  Requirement in all subjects and in Extended Essay to investigate issues and problems.  Requirement in TOK to reflect critically and draw links between different areas of knowledge. 24 October 2003 Gautam Sen

WHY IS AN IB STUDENT BETTER PREPARED FOR UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC LIFE? Studies three subjects of six in greater depth (equivalent to first year of most good universities) than standard school level courses Writes a research paper observing all formal academic conventions on a self-chosen topic (Extended Essay) Is encouraged to become critically aware of the different ways of knowing in various areas of knowledge, therefore is better prepared for active inquiry. (TOK) Is encouraged to reflect on and evaluate one’s own personal and intellectual growth. (TOK, CAS) 24 October 2003 Gautam Sen
