IIn the early 1960’s civil right leaders took on the task of educating the public about African Americans in the Workplace TThey influence Congress to pass three laws to prevent discrimination ◦T◦Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ◦A◦Age Discrimination in Employment Act ◦A◦Americans with Disabilities

 Companies cannot discriminate against an employee based on race, color, religion or sex  The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ◦ Has the power to sue any company who violates this  Employees bring thousands of lawsuits against companies for discrimination every year

 Companies cannot discriminate based on age  Employees between the ages for 40 and 70 can sue  They cannot force an employee to accept early retirement

 Cannot discriminate against people with disabilities  Cannot fire or refuse to hire  Applies to everything from blindness to diabetes  Companies must accommodate for these disabilities
