Why do we use animals in biomedical research? © Understanding Animal Research.

How is animal research regulated? Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals – Official set of recommendations for conducting animal research Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) – National oversight of animal research Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) – Oversees and approves local projects at a university or institute – Includes researchers, veterinarians and members of local community

Guiding principles in animal research Reduction means that numbers of animals are minimized. Replacement means that non-animal alternatives are used whenever possible. Refinement means that animals are looked after properly and any pain or distress minimized.
