The Judeo-Christian Foundations of Islam

Life of Muhammad: Caravan Manager Born: Mecca to a merchant family, orphaned age 5 Grew up and married Khadija, a rich widow Muhammad was troubled by the gap between the rich and the poor He began to meditate Through meditation the Angel Gabriel spoke to him. Troubled by the gap between the generosity of most and greediness of elites

The Prophetic Tradition Revelations Revelations from god given by the angel Gabriel God already revealed himself through Moses and Jesus (Hebrew and Christian traditions) But believed the final revelations from Allah were given to him. He had a very supportive wife. She was the first to convert to Islam. Otherwise, the story might have ended there… The Prophetic Tradition Adam Noah Abraham How many people do you believe they converted in 3 years? Answer: 30 Moses Jesus Muhammad

The Teachings of Muhammad In 622 (year 1 of the Islamic calendar) Muhammad and his followers moved from Makkah (Mecca) to Madinah (Medina) Medina: City of the Prophet Journey to Medina known as Hijrah Muhammad is considered a prophet Five pillars of Islam (More on this next): Belief, Prayer, Charity, Fasting, Pilgrimage to Mecca Way of life, not just belief Shari’ah- practical laws to regulate daily lives Based on interpretations of the Quran Family life, business practice, gov’t and moral conduct Does NOT separate religious matters from political or civil laws Forbidden to gamble, eat pork, drink alcohol or engage in dishonest behavior Muhammad is NOT divine. He is similar to Moses for Christians What other religions are monotheistic? Islam is a direct and simple faith- obey Allah

IslamAn Abrahamic Religion Muslims are strict monotheists. 2 Sects: Sunni & Shiite formed over the disagreement over Islamic leadership after the death of Muhammad. They believe in the Judeo-Christian God, which they call Allah. Muslims believe that the Torah and the Bible, like the Qur’an, is the word of God. “People of the Book”

Abraham’s Genealogy HAGAR ABRAHAM SARAH Ishmael Isaac 12 Arabian Tribes Jacob Esau 12 Tribes of Israel

The Prophetic Tradition Adam Does not necessarily mean they are related! Noah Abraham Moses Jesus Muhammad

Autonomous Organization No religious hierarchy Mullah: a man educated in Islamic theology and law Ayatollah: most learned and pious of men Caliph: Political or Religious successor to Muhammad – led to rift (Sunni v. Shia) A mosque is a place for public ceremony or assemblies/gathering places, not considered “sanctified”.

The Qur'an: God's Last Revelation

The Qur’an Muslims believe it contains the word of God. 114 suras (chapters). In the name of Allah, the compassionate, the merciful. Written in Arabic.

The Five Pillars of Islam

1. The Shahada The testimony/declaration of faith: There is no god worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger [or Prophet]. 1

2. The Salat The mandatory prayers performed 5 times a day: * dawn * noon * late afternoon * sunset * before going to bed Wash before praying. Face Mecca and use a prayer rug. 2

2. The Salat The call to prayer by the muezzin in the minaret. Pray in the mosque on Friday. 2

3. The Zakat Almsgiving-charitable donations: Muslims believe that all things belong to God. Zakat means both“purification”and “growth.” About 2.5% of your income. 3

4. The Sawm Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan: Considered a method of self-purification. No eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan. 4

5. The Hajj The pilgrimage to Mecca: Must be done at least once in a Muslim’s lifetime if financially and physically able. 2-3 million annually 5

5. The Hajj Those who complete the pilgrimage can add the title hajji to their name. 5

The Mosque The Muslim place of worship.

Other Islamic Religious Practices No alcohol or pork. No gambling. Sharia  body of Islamic law to regulate daily living. Three holiest cities in Islam: Mecca-birthplace of Muhammad Medina-city of the Prophet Jerusalem-where Muhammad ascended into heaven

The Spread of Islam Jihad (“Holy War”) against pagans and other non-believers (“infidels”): Within 100 years after Muhammad’s death, Muslim armies conquered large areas of Africa, Asia, & Europe converting non-Arabs to Islam. Arab traders and nomads/trade routes Easy to learn and practice. No priesthood. Teaches equality. Non-Muslims, who were “Peoples of the Book,” were allowed religious freedom, but paid additional taxes.
