Asset and Network Information Routable Road Centreline A Main Roads Perspective Steve Boston Manager Asset & Network Information August 2009

Asset and Network Information Main Roads Western Australia is entrusted with providing access to one of the largest geographically spread roads networks in the world. Our purpose is to provide safe and efficient road access that will enhance community lifestyles and ensure economic prosperity We are road managers

Asset and Network Information How do we manage our data ? l We manage our roads from an asset management perspective. l All road agencies worldwide manage their assets in a linear referencing manner. l Spatial is important to us, but not our main focus. l We are ‘roads’ centric, not ‘GIS’ centric with all our data management

Asset and Network Information Our use of spatial is increasing l All our road attribute data is spatial but we don’t store it that way l GIS applications are in use and are being developed further l Mobile solutions will see a greater use of spatial data collection and GPS positioning in the field l Our external customers are demanding greater access to our data l Internally, our reliance on and preference for linear is unlikely to change.

Asset and Network Information Integrated Road Information System (IRIS) l IRIS is a customised COTS solution l IRIS manages most of our corporate road data and information l IRIS manages our Network Control System (linear referencing) l The NCS is essentially our x, y and measure (slk) l IRIS is based on a link / node model.

Asset and Network Information

What’s in IRIS l All State, local roads and PSP’s ~ 150,000 km’s l Administrative data eg road hierarchy, RAV routes l Inventory data eg speed zones, lanes, surface. l Road Use data eg traffic volumes, vehicle classifications, travel time, crash l Road Condition data eg roughness, video

Asset and Network Information How do we manage the data? l Integrated system (IRIS) that’s centrally managed l Data management plans and owners for all data l Standards and representation guidelines in place l Road Information Centre – Knowledge Base l On every desktop including remote access by contractors

Asset and Network Information Maintenance of data NCS and administrative data l State roads are updated as a result of Main Roads initiating ‘work’ on the network l Local road updates are lodged with MRWA by LG using ROMAN Inventory l State and some Local road data updates by data owners as part of change process l Local road updates provided by LG within ROMAN / IRIS update process Road Use l Continuous monitoring l Programmed capture programs Condition l Regular network surveys

Asset and Network Information RRC Issues l Main Roads spatial centreline suits asset management requirements at present. l We currently don’t have a business case to capture some navigation attributes. l Without a business need it’s impossible to have sustainable data maintenance in place l Customer service obligations are now driving us towards evolving a Navigation capable centreline l The challenge for the RRC group has always been in understanding the gap Asset Management ≠ Navigation ≠ Mapping
